Employment
Manganui Ski Area is a small local ski hill run by a small team of part time and volunteer staff.
We do not run a Ski /Snowboard School here, so have no requirement for Ski or Snowboard Instructors. We regret we have no positions for ski/board instructors or ski school staff.
For the 2009 Season just completed we employed one person full time - our Ski Aea Operations / Safety Services Manager, who was an Avalanche 2 certified patroller. A small team of local, part time ski area operators were employed also.
For the upcoming 2010 season we have 1 position available for a level 2 avalanche certified Snow Safety Officer, who is seeking experience with a maritime snowpack and conditions, on contract for 4 months (June to September). Please email secretary@skitaranaki.co.nz with your details if suitably qualified and interested.
Our ski season can be fickle: our elevation is right on the snow line which means that we can go for periods of days without any skiing during winter. We get storm cycles followed by lots of precip from the Tasman Sea, sometimes falling as snow, more often as rain at lower levels. So we rarely have a permanent snow season - more like stretches of a few weeks at a time on our main lift T-bar slopes. We don't draw from a huge population base and are somewhat isolated as well, so our slopes are mostly uncrowded. As such we cannot employ full time a complement of staff through the season, as most ski areas do, and rely on a locally based crew of part time workers as staff "on call" for our operating periods. So from the above you may get an idea of our streamlined "budget" operation. We cannot offer much in the way of facilities, so our ticket price is currently NZ$40 when most other NZ fields are NZ$60-99. Can we suggest that if you are seeking employment at a similar non-commercial New Zealand ski area, that you use Canterbury Snowsports Association website http://www.skisouth.org.nz/skisouth/Fields/ to access information on the following fields in Canterbury, South Island, if you have not already done so: Broken River Craigieburn Porter Heights Mt. Olympus Temple Basin
Good luck with seeking employment in NZ!
