Junior Ski Racing and Training

The SMC Junior Ski Racing and Training Team's objective is to develop ski racers' (Juniors and Seniors) skills and promote the fun of skiing through training and competition.

The SMC Junior Ski Racing and Training Team's programmes are designed to be adaptable to suit the needs of the athletes. Programmes are organized into categories based primarily on age classifications.

SMC is a member of the Alpine Skiing Committee of Snow Sports NZ (SSNZ), the newly restructured national body for alpine ski racing (Ski Racing New Zealand has now been disbanded). The restructure now puts this committee under the SSNZ CEO and the SSNZ Board. The Alpine Ski Racing Manager Nils Coberger is the head Administrator of the Alpine Skiing Committee, as well as being the current National Ski Racing Coach. 

Junior Ski Racing and Training Program

The structure of Junior Ski Racing is determined by age categories, the competition structure in New Zealand.

The age groups are:

Most Race Training is done at Manganui Ski Area (on good snow years), usually on Sundays when the field is operating.
Progression follows on to Mt. Ruapehu, as below:

Once progression is made to the Junior Series, competitors are required to become members of SnowSports New Zealand.

2010 Race Report

In June we had a test run of the recently acquired wireless electronic race timing equipment and tested it out with a group of volunteer juniors at the Oakura Boardriders Club, and despite the hefty user manuals and multiple options it seemed to be reasonably simple to use.
 We wait for suitable cover to hold the Taranaki Secondary Schools Ski and Snowboard Championships.

We have a busy season ahead of us; refer to events calendar below for details.
Tony Gavigan of the Northern Snowsports Club (based at Ruapehu and Snow Planet) would like to organise a Junior Interclub event with the SMC at the Manganui Ski Area in July/August, with a contingency location of Mt. Ruapehu.

In 2009 Truman and Noah Edwards competed for SMC in the Ruapehu Series and various National Points Series events.

We look forward to thiscoming season and more training and racing at Manganui.
