Welcome to the latest edition of the SMC/Manganui e-newsletter.

We have had plenty of operating days in the School Holidays, with small crowds and lots of smiles.
No fighting the masses here!

After returning from a day at Ruapehu, it is nice to step back to the quieter uncrowded skiing experience that Manganui Offers.

And the fact that we have had skiing on Manganui for the last 2 months (weather/snow permitting of course) makes it feel like late season, but it is only mid-July!!
Still plenty of skiing ahead of us. The base on the Top Tow is shaping up for an excellent August-September.

As we always say - "COME UP AND GET IT WHILE IT'S ON!"

Recent rain has just 'trashed' our lower mountain cover, but with more snow forecast in the weekend, we will hopefully see a return to lower mountain skiing.

Snow.co launched their new website last week, and that meant a few problems for our websites Snow Report/Webcam page.
It is all mostly resolved once more and apart from the webcam all the data, and live weatherstation data, is all displayed once more.

The NZ Mountain Film Festival is coming around fast, 5 weeks to go, and films showcased promise to be great viewing. This weeks Feature Article details all the films on show.
Looks to be some great viewing - can't wait!

Please do your best to support this local event; if it breaks even, we can do it again. If we take a hit, then its gone!

GOINGS ON’ Around the Manganui Ski Area

On Mountain Emergencies training

SATURDAY JULY 25th.

For people commonly on the ski area, physically able, and that are willing to devote some "volunteer" time.

Top Tow Emergency Response Training Day. An introduction and refresher for folks that frequent the Top Tow skiing, and want to be able to competently assist Patrol should a medical emergency arise.

TOPICS: Overview of safety equipment locations; accident site management protocols(medical); toboggan storage, transfer, tailroping, and lowering.

LOCATION: Top Tow 1100hrs to 1400hrs. Interested parties contact Brad Carpenter, 0272800860 or bradcarp@aol.com, or show up the 25th.

Will be re-scheduled if we are not open, or its really bad weather.

Focus is on the medical evacuation side of things.

Avalanche search and rescue training will occur at a later date as soon as we get some transceivers and hopefully a little more snow.

JUNIOR SKI RACING AND TRAINING

The SMC Junior Ski Racing and Training Team's objective is to develop ski racers' skills and promote the fun of skiing through training and competition.

The SMC Junior Ski Racing and Training Team's programmes are designed to be adaptable to suit the needs of the athletes. Programmes are organized into categories based primarily on age classifications.

Christina Binsbergen the SMC coach, advises that conditions and snow permitting in the weekends, she will be keen to undertake some race training for those interested.

We'll keep the website and snow report updated if there is to be an upcoming coaching session. All SMC junior skiers are welcome!

SMC will provide ONE complimentary (free) lift ticket voucher for each team manager from each school …on application to the race coordinator.
SMC will provide COMPETITORS lift tickets at members rate ($15), providing that each school get their manager to buy all competitors lift  tickets (ie organize total payment for all their schools competitors).

Over the last several years the Taranaki Primary and Intermediate Schools Skiing Champs have been coordinated by Philli Butt of Oakura School The Coordinator this year is yet to be announced.
The Secondary schools hold their Championships on the first suitable day of next term and the Primary and Intermediate schools follow on the next suitable day. The event is held at the Manganui Ski area on Mt Taranaki a suitable day means adequate snow cover and fair weather.

Bring your lunch - pies and snack food and drinks are available on the mountain. This event is all about participation - register with your school, turn up and you will be given a start!

I will be attending the event as per the last several years with radios, stopwatches, and computer and printer to record the results.

I will attend to set the race course, and we will have Safety Services on hand for any first aid requirements.

The SMC committee has a number of projects on the go.
These include…

• Warwick Brown building upgrade - DoC consent, support letters and funding applications
• Manganui Lodge Accommodation t's & c's review and implementation, price restructuring
• Social Event - NZ Mountain Film Festival (formerly Wanaka Fim Festival) involvement 
• Top Tow replacement (new rope delivery is imminent)
• Coffee Machine for Ticket Office/Canteen investigation
• Base station radio install in the T-bar shed

1.5 oz Vodka
3.5 oz Iced tea, pre-sweetened

In a large ice filled glass, pour Vodka, then tea. Add a lemon wedge for garnish.
Surprisingly refreshing.

It's  now 5 weeks to go before the Mtn Festival and tickets are now on sale at the Govett Brewster Art Gallery in town for this venue, and Butlers Reef Tavern in Oakura for the Hall.

We have 13 movies in all including the  3 festival Prizewinners Lost Tower, Acopan Tepui and No need for Parking.  These are split over the two nights, so If you would like to see them all, grab a $25 double pass, if you only have time for one, choose your night for $15.  Beware that seating at the Govett Brewster in town sells out rapidly as they only have room for 100 (50 couples) and we have sold out on a number of occasions since screening there from April thru July.  Oakura Hall has room for 200 - punters are advised to bring a blanket and/or cushion!

Mark Sedon who runs the Mountain Festival oversaw the biggest Wanaka Film festival yet with 150 outdoor adventure movies entered from around the world -  amusing, gripping and plain terrifying ordeals with over 1400 tickets sold.  We hope to be able to bring the highlights of the festival to Taranaki every year; so your support will not only ensure funding for the clubs involved (SMC included!) ; but secure us as a fixture on the Alpine Councils tour of smaller centres with these movies.

Apparently these movies are every bit as good as the Baff Film Festival; if not more so as we have several Kiwi films with the Peoples choice award going to Lost Tower, locals on a Patagonian ...  misadventure.

Children - these movies are fine for kids to come along; just be aware that it does start at 7.30 and finishes between 10 and 11pm on the various nights.  We were unable to manage a childrens discount intially;  perhaps when this event becomes  more established.

At the Govett Brewster 12 August we will have Sam Trumpet; a musician and trumpeteer on a genuine alphorn from 7pm and playing for the Oakura Hall Wed 19 from 7pm for half an hour will be locals Missie and the Gentle Kings.  These musicians have volunteered their services at extremely low cost in order to up the ambience of the night!

As at arthouse cinema; there will be fine wine and Mikes mild ales; an open bar as well as retro candy and icecreams.  There will be an intermission.
